Ansar Bahini was established on 12 February 1948 and the Ansar Act was approved by the then East Bengal Legislative Council and came into effect on 17 June 1948. Since then, the training program of this force was temporarily held at Shahbagh in Dhaka. During the Indo-Pak war in 1965, Ansars were assigned to the defense of the country's border outposts. After the swearing in of the first Provisional Government of Bangladesh (Mujibnagar) in the War of Independence, the Provisional President was given a guard of honor by 12 members of Ansar forces led by Ansar Platoon Commander Yad Ali. During the war of independence, the Ansar forces were declared insurgents and abolished. Ansar members participated in the war of independence with about 40,000 rifles. A total of 670 people including 9 officers, 4 employees and 657 Ansars of Ansar forces were martyred in the war. 1 Veer Bikram and 2 Veer Prateeks of the army were awarded. During the post-independence period from 1973 to 1975, the training program of Ansar forces was conducted in Savar near Dhaka. Village Defense Party (VDP) was formed in 1976 and City Defense Party (TDP) in 1980. Later both these forces merged with Ansar forces. National Ansar Training Center (NATC) was established in 1976 at Safipur in Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur District. It was renamed Ansar Training School in 1983. Ansar Training School was upgraded to Ansar Academy in 1986. It was renamed Ansar-VDP Academy in 1995. The force is currently governed by the Ansar Bahini Act-1995 and the Battalion Ansar Act-1995, which, when passed by Parliament, received the assent of His Excellency the President on 15 February 1995 and came into effect on 16 February 1995. According to these two laws, Ansar Bahini is a disciplined force as per the provisions of Article 152 of the Constitution.
